Hällabrottet and Yxhult
Mining and working-up of limestone took place on different locations in Närke already in the middle ages but most prominently in Hällabrottet in the parish of Kumla. Yxhultbygdens Kultur- och hembygdsförening, which is a society for preserving the relics from the old days and for documenting the local history, started out a few years ago. Yxhult AB is a company founded back in the late 1800's and operating primarily in Hällabrottet.

Lekebergslagen
The northwestern part of Närke (Lekebergslagen) was in ancient times an important player in Swedish iron ore mining and milling. The business was carried out in small units owned and operated by local people on a cooperative basis.

The explotation of the woods of Tiveden
In the early 1600's Tiveden was a large area of woods and modest mountains with very few permanent inhabitants. The main road, or rather path, from Stockholm via the province of Närke down to the province of Västergötland led through the region where the only shelter was a small monastery operated by the orden of Saint Anthony. Anders Boij, scotsman by origin but then citizen of Stockholm, started several iron mills in the region.

Emigration to North America
The emigration from Närke was on a large scale during some years in the late 1800's. To some extent it offered an alternative when the old small iron mills in a short period of time closed down due to new technology and largescale production units. August Eriksson, born 1866, however came from Asker i eastern Närke. For more than 30 years did he maintain correspondence with his brother in Sweden, who was a shoemaker.

In his first letter back to Sweden August tells about his prosperous journey.
In a later letter he describes his work as factory worker 1902.
