The Province of Närke
Back to English index page

The province of Närke is today the southern part of the county of Örebro. Provincial capital is the city of Örebro, about 125 miles west of the Swedish capital Stockholm. Örebro has been the administrative center of the province of Närke since its early foundation which is believed to have been at some time during the 13th century. Örebro was granted township in the early 14th century..

There are three cities in Närke. Örebro is by far the biggest one with around 100,000 inhabitants, Kumla comes second with around 15,000 and Askersund third having about 4,000 inhabitants. Hallsberg and Laxå are two fairly big burroughs along the railway Stockholm - Gothenburg. Fjugesta is the principal municipality in northwestern Närke having about 2,000 inhabitants.

This website is a private initiative by Ulf Persson and Curt Fröberg who are both interested in the local history of the province and interested in presenting pieces of information about the province on the Internet. The name of the site is MittNerike which means My Närke (Nerike being an old way of spelling and more suitable as domain name). The name is chosen to indicate that we have no ambition to present a complete picture of Närke but rather a more personal view.

Under the heading Socknar i Närke you will find a presentation of places of interest in the communities by order of their old parishes. The community of Degerfors is to be added since part of it is located in Närke, possibly Karlskoga, too.The heading Bruk och gårdar takes you to a presentation of more than 60 old iron mill and farm manors. Many of them are still in private use but a few can be visited and at least the manor of Svartå is run as a rural hotel where you may stay for some period or just over night.

The website is in Swedish but as a service we have translated the front page into English. Even if you cannot read all the words you get an idea of what it is all about by looking at the pictures.
